Speedway Children's Charities joins United Blood Services, NASCAR Foundation for third annual Sept. 11 Blood & Marrow Drive
NASCAR fans and all members of the Las Vegas community are being called upon to help those in need on Sept. 11, by participating in the NASCAR Foundation's Third Annual Blood & Marrow Drive Presented by Nationwide Insurance.
The blood drive will be held at Las Vegas Motor Speedway's infield media center from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. LVMS is one of more than 30 NASCAR tracks participating in this annual event. In 2007, more than 3,000 pints of blood were collected. Anyone who donates blood will have an opportunity to add their names to the bone marrow registry through the National Marrow Donor Program.
The drive is a partnership between the NASCAR Foundation, Jimmie Johnson Foundation and the Hendrick Marrow Program. This is the second year the Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities and LVMS have hosted the blood and marrow drive. The largest effort of its kind within the motorsports industry, the NASCAR Foundation Blood & Marrow Drive has collected enough pints of blood and names for the National Marrow Donor Program's registry to potentially save more than 17,000 lives since its launch in 2006.
To donate blood, individuals must be at least 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Those who donate blood will have the chance to win several prizes throughout the day including passes to the Neon Garage for the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Pole Day at LVMS, Sam's Town 300 race tickets for February 28, 2008, NASCAR memorabilia and more.
Individuals who donate blood at any of the participating tracks will be registered for the chance to meet reigning NASCAR Champion Jimmie Johnson at a future race. All who donate blood at LVMS will receive two tickets to the Qwik Liner Las Vegas 350 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race on Sept. 20 and one ticket to Defending the Caveman at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
Individuals may register to donate by visiting www.bloodhero.com and type in the sponsor code: nascar. Appointments can also be scheduled by calling (702) 562-2166. For more information on the National Marrow Donor Program and the bone marrow registry, please visit www.marrow.org.
United Blood Services has been the Las Vegas area's non-profit community blood provider since 1943, and serves patients in more than 20 hospitals in Southern Nevada. The United Blood Services network is one of the nation's oldest and largest non-profit blood-service organizations, and is a founding member of America's Blood Centers and the AABB.
Making a difference in a child's life is the focus of Speedway Children's Charities. SCC strives to do this in collaboration with the non-profit organizations it supports nationwide. Individually, SCC's local chapters identify the needs of children in their communities and award grants to organizations that address them. Last December, the Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities granted $314,000 to 67 local children's causes during its annual grant distribution ceremony.
